No cheap stuff, no cheap methods. This is where over-engineering works.
Frame - Fully welded 2x3 tubular steel tongue and perimeter, with 1 1/2" angle for gussets and supports. A 5000# coupler with a lock, for a 2" ball. A 2000# A-frame jack. (Optional electric jack is available.) Safety chains & a break-away switch for security. Stabilizing jacks are mounted to the frame at the rear.
Axle - Dexter Torflex #9 w/ electric brakes and EZ lube hubs. This axle has an independent suspension cushioned with rubber to provide a smooth ride and maximum stability. There is no transfer of road shock from one wheel to the other. It also has a low profile, which provides maximum road clearance. I normally use a 2200# version with a 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern. (Optional 3500# Torflex #10 gives more carrying capacity and has more bolt pattern choices for added flexibility with custom wheels.)
Wheels - 15" rim with a 5 bolt on 4.5" centers. There are many, many cool choices available. Matching the tow vehicle is always fun. You can go vintage, hot rod, modern, utilitarian, almost any style works. Standard is the classic Cragar chrome smoothies w/baby moons.
Tires - Carlisle Radial Trail, ST225/75R-15/D1, a tire specifically made for trailers. It is steel belted with an all weather tread. An air pressure capacity of 65lbs. allows for a larger carrying capacity, with an added bonus of also providing less rolling resistance, which gives better fuel economy. This is the advantage over most car type tires, however, anything can be used if there are more important considerations. For instance, wide whites look really cool around red painted smoothies w/ baby moons...or, raised white letters around Cragar SS's...
Body - No particle wood, waferboard, or vinyl backed panels (which traps moisture and can mold). No formaldehyde treated products are used for interior surfaces. Exterior grade adhesives and galvanized screws will provide a long service life.
Floor - 3/4" tongue and groove flooring plywood, completely undercoated, framed using treated lumber and covered with a premium grade vinyl sheet flooring.
Walls - 2 layers of AB grade plywood glued and screwed together to eliminate warping. Interior covered by a thick ribbed or textured felt, which insulates and gives a comfortable, durable, no mar surface so important for a cozy living space.
Roof - Framed 2x2 cross rafters are on 15" centers. The ceiling is a gorgeous natural colored birch beaded plank plywood. Fiberglass insulation is topped by water resistant mahogany plywood.
Cabinetry - Frames are hidden screwed and glued, no staples. All of our cabinets are custom produced in house. Call about your favorite style to have in your Teardrop.
Exterior - RV style corrugated aluminum siding has the advantage of being fastened between each panel instead of just the perimeter. It is complemented by either a different style and color of aluminum or the popular "Woodie" look. Mahogany works well, stained or not, with several coats of exterior spar polyurethane. The front corners are reinforced with either diamond plate aluminum or ABS plastic to deflect road abuse. Putty is used under all moldings and fixtures, it swirls around the screws to prevent leaks. All of the exterior screws are clear coated or painted and sit on neoprene backed washers. Finally, all seams are sealed with 50yr. siliconized acrylic.
Windows - Tinted, with screens.
Side door - Custom made commercially manufactured unit , 1 1/2" thick with a no leak extruded frame and captured hinge, plus a cool door knob.
Lighting - The tail lights are LED and there are more clearance lights than standard, all exceed DOT standards. Very high visibility.
Trailer Connector - Standard RV style, round 7-way with flat pins. This accommodates the running lights, turn signals, brake lights, the electric brakes and a charge line. If you install a charge line in your car, it can recharge the trailer battery as you drive. To activate the trailer brakes, a brake control device will need to be installed as well.
